Although many languages are spoken in Yukon homes and some workplaces, English is the predominant language in Yukon. Language training is essential for immigrants who do not speak English.
Several different programs are available for learning English in Whitehorse. Language training opportunities in other Yukon communities are limited.
Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)
For landed immigrants and nominees, free English classes are offered at the Multicultural Centre of the Yukon. Applicants must meet CIC eligibility criteria.
By providing basic language instruction to adult newcomers in English and French, LINC facilitates the social, cultural and economic integration of immigrants and refugees into Canada.
In addition, the LINC curriculum includes information that helps to orient newcomers to the Canadian way of life. This, in turn, helps them to become participating members of Canadian society as soon as possible.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
Yukon College in Whitehorse offers a variety of options for the study of English as a Second Language. Both international students and Canadians are welcome.
Their qualified instructors are eager for you to succeed in your studies. Staff provides a supportive and rewarding environment for students interested in developing their English skills.
Yukon College offers 5 levels of ESL. A certificate is granted after successful completion of each level. You must pay applicable fees to participate in these classes.
Enhanced Language Training (ELT)
Yukon College also offers a course designed to improve the employability skills of participating permanent residents and protected persons, so that they may find and secure work commensurate with their skills and experience.
Students will develop job-specific language skills, review the Canadian Labour Code, and explore the foreign credential recognition process. Students will also participate in a two-week, full-time work placement. This initiative is funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Participants must meet CIC eligibility criteria.
Workplace Language Training (WLT)
Workplace Language Training, funded through Yukon College by Advanced Education, Government of Yukon aims to improve the language skills of newcomers that have already secured employment.
Through this program, which is offered in the workplace, newcomers to Canada will become familiar with workplace culture and will master fundamental skills in speaking, writing, problem solving, document use and English-based numeracy.
