Settlement Services – Immigration – Government of Yukon

In Yukon, Settlement Services are offered at the Multicultural Centre of the Yukon (MCY) and L’Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY)

The Multicultural Centre of the Yukon provides direct services to immigrants of Canada including information and referral services, orientation, translation and interpretation, counselling, and assistance with a job search. MCY staff can assist with immediate settlement needs such as health care, transportation, housing, education and employment. These services can be offered on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting through various programs offered at the Multicultural Centre of the Yukon.

These services exist to facilitate the successful settlement and integration of immigrants and refugees into the social, economic, and cultural life in a new country and community.

Through funding from Citizen and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Yukon Government, Advanced Education Branch (AEB) services are available to permanent residents, refugees, Yukon Nominees, Canadian Citizens and individuals with work permits. This includes an introduction to the local community that would provide the newcomer with a sense of belonging to the community, and also provide information about their rights and obligations

Services to immigrants include:

  • Programs to help cope with challenges of everyday living
  • Introduction to the local community
  • Information regarding rights and responsibilities
  • Providing English classes (LINC Language Program) and use of a Language Lab
  • Orientation and information workshops
  • Referrals to government services
  • Assistance in filling out forms for social insurance numbers, driver's licenses, health care cards and Permanent Residence Applications
  • Referrals to doctors, dentists, lawyers, and other services
  • Employment sector information and programming
  • Interpreter/translation services
  • General questions on Canada and life in the Yukon.

The Multicultural Centre of the Yukon welcomes the opportunity to meet with immigrants and assist them with their transition into their new community.The Centre is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm and newcomers are welcome to drop in at their convenience.

Settlement services for francophone’s

L’Association franco-yukonnaise (AFY) provides an information and referral service in French available at the Centre de la francophonie, downtown Whitehorse. A personalized service based on identified needs provides support and guidance to newcomers for their settlement in the Yukon: job search, information about French education, health services, social insurance and health cards, driver’s licence, opening a bank account, various volunteer opportunities, finding housing, networking, Internet access, etc.

L’AFY collaborates with a francophone immigration network to optimize the economic and social integration of newcomers into the Francophone community.

Made possible by the Immigration Settlement Program of Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), the service is offered to permanent residents and eligible workers under the YNP.
